Removing roof from Gas-Electric

I want to remove the the roof from my Bachmann Gas-Electic in order to install weights inside. Can any one give me a hint?

Hey Bill,

Check this older forum post when you get a minute.

Basically to remove the shell you have to gently pry it from the frame

Hope this helps

My Bachmann doodlebug is an early production run model. The entire body shell comes off of the frame, and not just the roof. Each end and each side has small lugs fitting into small slots in the plastic shell. The end lugs are very snug. Use a small screw driver to pry apart at each lug, and then hold the shell away from the frame at each lug with toothpicks. After all lugs are separated, you can lift the shell off of the frame.

Heartland, Many thanks foir your tip, it worked. Somewhere in it’s instructions to get into the DCC stuff, it said to remove the screw in the coupler first, but I don’t think it is needed. In fact, getting the screw and cover plate bacjk into place were harder than removing the body! Also, I lost the wee screw, do you know what size it is? 00-90 or smaller?

John, Thanks for your tip but I could not get the link, maybe I missed something. However, I was told of another way to do the job, basically the same but explaining how to do it, and it worked. When I looked for a place to put some weight, the only open area was atop the DCC stuff, and after placing a fishing sinker there, it was too tall for the body to rest where it should, so I removed it,reassembled the car and it seemed to run OK and did not slip in it’s usual spot. Dunno, but at least I no know how to get into it again, if I must.

Bill … I suspect the screws are metric. I think it is good to keep an assortment of small screws available at your work bench of both metric and US. I use the trial-and-error method with my assortment.
