Removing the film on foam board

Is there a way to make removing the film from the foam board any easier. All I can get are small pieces and smaller pieces off. I am using the pink board that is 1/4" and folds out for flat coverage. Thanks for any help.

If your referring to foam core board that we use for building structures etc. and is otherwise used for mounting photos etc. No you don’t want to remove the outer layer at all. It’s a laminated product with the foam laminated between two pieces of cellulose. The lamination gives it it’s strength without it you’ll have mush.

Thanks for the response but this is the same as the 1" or 2" extruded product it’s just 1/4" x 24" x 48" several pieces attached to each other accordion style. I do not know what its purpose is. I bought it at HD in the same isle with the rest of the extruded foam. It will only tear off in small pieces. I can get going at an angle but it still tears apart. Its almost like its applied with some type of static adhesive or during the extrusion process.

My experience is both limited to the Dow blue stuff and dated. However, I don’t recall it being more difficult than peeling the film off your vehicle license decals, and certainly no tearing. Have you tried a hair dryer? Warm it in sweeps along the breaking edge and see if that helps.

I left the plastic film in place on my fan-fold underlayment - in use for three years plus under caulked-down flex with no problems to date.

I did peel the foil (or mylar?) layer off some of the product - it appeared metallic enough to constitute a short-circuit problem under turnouts. I pivot my points with long wire nails, which penetrate all the way to the plywood sub-roadbed. Removing the stuff was a royal PITA - it has little punctures on one inch centers, and tends to tear at every one.

The product is Owens Corning Fanfold Underlayment. I tried a hairdryer and was not much better. The film is not metalic just a brittle very thin parchment like substance. Thanks for the suggestions I guess its a wasted $35. I might try soaking in water and thinned out white glue to see if it has a tendency to peel.

I remember in another thread someone pointing out that its only found on thicknesses less than one inch and that its some sort of protection. But that its only there during transit and storage, but does not affect its use if removed. It is kinda tricky to peel off but if you work slowly it comes off in huge sheets.

This is off the topic, but I ran into a problem with not removing the “Mould Release”, from my Walthers’ resin ore boat. All you have to do is get a bottle of “Resin Prep”, brush it on, and then wash it off with warm soapy water. If you don’t do this the pieces that you glue together (eg. the ship-lap joints that join the hull sections together), your model falls apart. Bob Hahn

Thanks I"ll keep trying it is very hard to even get off with a surform too as I wae trying that last night.
