Rene's model truck customizing

I wanted to take a moment to applaud Rene’s little piece on customizing model pickups. I’d personally be wary of cracking too much glass (lest your truck not pass safety inspection ), but the painting tips are right on. All I have to do is go out to my driveway to look for examples to duplicate.

One thing I’d add is some rust down around where the mud is and in the bed. If the truck has a steel bed (mine is wood), all those scrapes and all that accumulated dirt will lead to rusting. A dry brushing of browns and oranges will do. Go light for a well-cared for truck; go heavy for a beater.

Some trucks rust more in particular areas than others. Be observant to what you see on the road, or search the 'net for pics of your subject (if you don’t have any in your neighborhood like it). My '69 Chevy, like all of its kin, suffers from heavy rust int he rocker panels under the doors. If the model is plastic, use a knife to carefully carve some of the material away and sand paper to thin what’s left. If the model is die-cast, use a rotary tool for the same effect. Wear eye protection! Then, hist the edges with that rust.

Rene gave me some good ideas, and you can even go further with them. Thanks for the prompting, Rene!

Thank you! Good point–some trucks rust more than others and in certain locations. Searching for photos online is a big help. I enjoyed the project.

Definitely–the old squarebody Chevys (which I love) are very prone to rusting around the fender.

Hmm, I wonder if I should consider a round 2 article–adding rust.

Please do. There are various methods, some of which I have never tried and would like to learn about (like the “Rust-all” product).

You’ll be right in line with the times!
