I’ve been asked to repaint a proto2000 Switcher engine that came already decorated. is it possible to remove (safely!) the details like handrails and grab irons without breaking them?I cnanot repaint the engine with the details attached since the CPR paint scheme is quite complex and masking around them would be impossible.

The detail parts are heat staked and/or solvent bonded. Not too difficult to remove, but not really replaceable. You may want to give LL a call, and see if you can get the sprues with the detail parts.

To remove many of the grabs, scrape the melted area inside the shell w/ an Xacto chisel blade. Then work the part loose. As nfmisso has said most parts will not be replaceable, they will break or distort.
