I have a half-dozen of the old MDC 70-ton open-top hoppers that I wish to put back into service. Trouble is, they are missing their trucks. Can somebody recommend a brand of replacement trucks w/metal wheels that will fit the bolster of this type of car frame?
I tried fitting a truck from an old Athearn Blue-Box car kit but the hole was too wide.
I modify the bolster by gluing a piece of 1/8" styrene tubing into the opening to create a pivot for the truck looking similar to the Athearn bolster I use Evergreen #224
If the hole is smaller that the tubing, I use a drill bit to enlarge it to 1/8 then glue the tubing in with styrene solvent… If larger, I normally will “glue” the tubing in with body putty OR fill the hole completely with body putty & then drill 1/8" & glue in tubing with CA
i usually don’t trim the tubing to “final length” until I have placed the car on the track resting on the trucks & checking coupler height just in case I have to add a Kadee washer or two I then trim the the tubing to correct size once everything checks out
