Repowering Engine

I’m not going to get any new SW1’s. The one I have runs a little jerky and is a big current hog and is old. What do I need to know to get a new motor? Where do I get them? How do I install them? etc?
Thanks

Perhaps there’s a reason it’s jerky and a big current hog… Have you tried taking it apart, cleaning everything and reassmbling it? To where to get motors, not to long ago, I purchased 10 Cannon motors on ebay at $5 per… I just installed one in an old brass steamer and I can barely stall the motor… Even when I try, current stays below 1/4 amp… Not too bad for $5… To repower a diesel you’ll probably want a double shaft motor (these are only single ended) but you might find a solution there… You could also try Northwest Shortline. They may have what you need but by the time you pay for it, you can probably score a new S-1 (trainworld.com) for the same or less money…

Just some thoughts.

Well there is an SW1 ending at about 9pm EST tonight. Would it be worth it to get one of these instead. If so, which?

Sounds like a bad motor, but try this first(I assume this is a Walthers SW1?):

o - Disconnect the motor from the drive train. now apply power - same problem? If so, get a new motor. If the motor runs fine and draws little current, you may have a drive train problem. These engines have a really lousy ‘spring’ univesal between the motor/flywheels and the trucks. Walthers has FREE universal upgrade kits for this engine - write them a letter.

I have 2 of these engines and they run great. I got the second univeral kit from Walthers about a year ago, so I suspect they still have them(even though the engine has been out of production for some time). I have installed the universal upgrade kit, and N/S wheels(order either from NWSL or Atlas S2 or S4 wheel sets).

This engine is not a Wathers. It is Model Power. But I am bidding on a Walthers SW1.

Junk the Model Power. They were NOT a quality item. The walthers SW1 is a
high quality loco. You will be quite surprised at the difference. I, too, own a
Walthers SW1 and am thoroughly pleased with it. Hope this helps.

The Walthers SW-1 is a great choice. I have the SOO version, I believe they had a good selection of road names. Check for a rubber hose coupler that was used for the rear drive shaft. As has been suggested, email Walthers for the free upgrade kit, which consists of a plastic universal to replace the rubber hose.

Is the Model Power the same as the old AHM SW-1?
