Once again, government tripping over its own fat, grossly overweight, bloatedness. But don’t worry, Obama money will bail them out.
High speed is relative. Henry Ford’s Model T was high speed compared to the alternative, the horse and buggy. Just like the first Farmall tractors were high speed when compared to the alternative, a steam tractor or teams of draft horses.
I thought California had the best chance to get HSR up and running, but it seems that those who make the laws have the hardest time obeying them.
Humm… The High speed rail project was authorized with requirements that were a mandatory part of the project. These were both physical and financial. It seems like the Governor wants to ignore most of the requirements of the enabling laws because they are not feasible. Can you say fraud? Governor Brown’s ego is truly amazing. One of the toughest rules for the High Speed Rail Project Is that it’s operation can NOT require a subsidy. No one has figured out how that can happen but still the money continues flow into this financial ‘sinkhole’.
I’d love to ride a safe, comfortable, affordable HSR train between SoCal and the Bay Area too, but the cost to build (now flirting with a mere $100 BILLION) guarantees that this is a loser of monumental proportions.
Gov. Brown wants to be remembered for the thing, but it’s almost certainly not going to get built in our lifetimes. (Public opinion here has turned sharply against it, even among some of the more financially clueless.) His legacy is looking more to be a North American version of Greece: still sunny and beautiful, but broke.
Here again, against the will of the voting citizens of the state. Will the politicians ever learn? I have serious doubts.
Governor Moonbeam, as he was known during his first terms many years ago, is not solely at fault for California’s economic mess. However, by channeling more money into what is becoming a failed attempt at HSR he will ensure that the state remains in financial difficulty. The politicians in Sacramento are just as bad as those in Washington, DC.
