RFD TV Train Shows

I know this subject has been addressed somewhere on this forum in the past few months but I can’t locate specific information through a search.

I’ve just gained access to RFD TV and notice their schedule includes several train shows. I caught “Trains & Locomotives” this morning…essentially an hour long railfaning show. But I also noted that in coming days they will be presenting “The Train Show” and “Great Layouts”. Anyone familiar with the specific range of topics/content for either or both shows? If they are worthwhile from a modeler’s standpoint I’d like to get a some tapes and record them.

The “TRAIN SHOW” has some excellant shows on anything from old small town logging railroads to The Challengers to the modern diesel lines. I tape everyone on and decide which ones I was to record to VCR tapes. As for “GREAT LAYOUTS” I haven’t found one yet that I was interested in. Mostly Lionel and O gage stuff. If you are looking for an Allen Keller layout to be shown you might be waiting for awhile. But the “TRAIN SHOW” is outstanding.

The Great Layouts show is actually a video series you can purchase. I believe the full title is “Greate Layouts in O-Scale” From what I have seen of it, they take a tape and split it into 2 shows. It also seems that the pre-reque for having a layout featured is owning an O-scale Big Boy. I used to Tivo both that and the Train Show… now it is just the Train Show.

The train show has a pretty decent web site. http://www.thetrainshow.com/ They also have a video of the digitrax sound decoder on thier site. It’s 8 minutes long and 22 MB to download but it’s pretty interesting. In general I love the train show but I wi***here was more like it and less like great layouts. I’ll have to get me one of those new fangled tivo thingys.

I’ve got at least eight full videos that I’ve recorded off of RFD (32 + hours)… I came across it one night while channel surfing about a year and a half ago. Great channel!.
They have a web site that you might want to visit and fill out their survey so they’ll continue to air the train shows…

Great stuff I would give it[tup][tup][tup][tup][tup][tup][tup][tup][tup][tup], if I had that many arms.

Available on both Dish Network and DirecTV, and if your cable company doesn’t offer it, bug them early and often until they do. Fill out the survey on the RFDTV web site so they keep them coming!

Yup, I found it on our Dish Network on 379…Problem is that there is no channel guide for RFD on the Dish web site, so you never know what is on when. I usually get the “taters with au gratin” show or “How to train your Horse” or “String Barbed Wire without Losing your Shirt” shows…but I did see one of the Train layouts. It was ok, but was for O scale and looked kinda cheezy to me. I’ll keep trying…maybe I’ll larn how ta cook pig snout stew or sumtin else from this country station…[:D]

Thanks for the info, guys.

THE TRAIN SHOW is hosted by Rich Einhorn, and he’s a hoot–a genuinely nice guy and someone I wouldn’t mind knowing at all. They’ve had some good layout tours and seem to cover the spectrum–everything from Z through Lionel and Garden. GREAT LAYOUTS is geared more to the O gauge Hi-Rail modeler, but features some interesting layouts. RFDTV also often features a nifty program for kids called I LOVE TOY TRAINS, which features a lot of classic Lionel and American Flyer. TRAINS AND LOCOMOTIVES features a lot of rail-fan videos that are chock full of interesting prototype scenes and ideas for modelers. Now if RFDTV could get the rights to TRACKS AHEAD, I’m sure there would be a lot of Direct-TV happy campers.
And John, don’t knock the “Taters and Gratin” recipe–I tried it and it’s GREAT, LOL!

My club’s Operations Road Show project is featured this week on show #20 of The Train Show. It airs today (Wednesday, September 14) at 2:30pm and 10:30pm (Eastern Daylight TIme), tomorrow at 6:30am, and on Monday, September 19 at 7:30am.

Rich stopped by our layout near the end of the NMRA National Convention in Cincinnati this July, and shot quite a lot of tape of our layout, our operating scheme, and the things we do with them.

Even though we were pretty worn out from a long week, we had a lot of fun during the shoot and are looking forward to seeing how this episode turns out (though I’ve always hated how I come across on camera and tape- I have the classic “face that was meant for radio”).

Set a season pass up on my Tivo last night! Thanks for the heads up…

Hi, lots of good shows on RFD tv. I just looked at the website http://rfdtv.com/ this should get you there. Program listings, videos and more!!

And if I could get my Cable co. to carry the RFD channel, I would be very happy. Instead, Charter Cable Co. gives me 999 channels of which I only watch about 10%, and when I request the RFD channel, they tell me that their marketing dept. ( in their infinite wisdom ) needs to have many people request the channel in this viewing area ( Central Massachusetts ). So I have idiot MTV and a host of other brain numbing programs that are designed for the feeble minded. Do I sound [censored]?? I AM !!! They need to take a course in Marketing 101!!!

The nice thing about the RFD scheduling is that it is fairly regular, that is the shows are on at usually the same days and times each week. And, the shows are repeated in the overnight and early mornings. I have a PVR, so I record the programs in the off hours so that I can watch them on my own schedule. RFD has been pretty good about running a new series when an existing series has been exhausted, so there is variety in what you see. There really is something for everybody. My DISH Network offers a program guide, so I can preview the contents and decide if the program is something I want to watch or not.

I am on DirecTv and have no problem getting the guide to show up. My guide on my DirecTivo box goes as far as 2 weeks ahead. I believe it is on channel 378 (or in that vincinity) in my area (Chicagoland).

Wish I’d seen this post a little earlier! I tuned in at the end, just in time to see Fritz in the fiddle yard!

Maybe I’ll catch it on the rerun!
