Rhinelander Logging and Rail Museum Model Railroad Photos

Built by the Rhinelander Model Railroad club. It represetns pretty well the city or Rhinelander.

Nice pics. Glad you are having a good time. You seem to be missed here, got your own thread.

Space Mouse, I love those log decks. What were the logs made from? Where is Rhinelander? Peter Smith, Memphis

They are small sticks. Rhinlander is in North Central Wisconsin.

Uh, Spacemouse…

I was in Rhinelander yesterday, twice. Maybe the next time you head North you might want to swing past my place. (Central Wisconsin).

Regards,

Mark

I’ll do that Mark.

Back up fro the working crowd.

Spacemouse, I love your pics, I especially like the stormcloud. Was wondering, what is the large black in the pics, a large lake? Keep it up. Mike

It’s an access hole.

Hi Chip: I was up thee several years ago. I managed to see the muesum and a little of the town. I was born and raised in Milwaukee but hadn’t had alot of travel up north. Where is the layout located? Is the Thunder Lake Narrow gauge represented on the layout anywhere? Thanks for the pictures and have a good one.

The layout is in the basement of the station. The volunteers usually make sure you get down there and see it. I don’t remember the the seeing the Thunder Lake on the layout.

If you get up that way, about 40 minutes east is a restored (by goverment grant) 2-6-2 Prairie and several coaches. You can ride a few miles to a remote logging museum in early 1900’s sytle. Didn’t get there this year, but did last year.

Chip,

What did you glean from either the museum or the museum layout that will help you in your next layout? Was there anything that jumped out at you and made you say, “Wow! That’s pretty cool! I’m gonna have to try that.”

Tom

To be honest, no. The logging operations in WI are as different as night and day from the Pacific Northwest. The layout itself is, by necessity, very dense, while I want more of a scenery intensive layout. Still, it was very much worth a looksee.

Hey Chip,

I was just at Camp 5 this last weekend with my reenacting group. Got to camp out at Camp 5 and road the train several times on Saturday. Neat part of the operation was that they still run the locomotive using coal. Wish I had known about the museum in Rhinelander, we could have made a side trip on Sunday. Oh, well, next year.

Scott

OK, where’s the forest? those logs in the water must have come from somewhere.

Chip: You reminded me that I did go down to the basement when I was there. The fellow said that they were going to build a layout there but nothing had been started yet. I also went to camp 5 on that trip. I road the locomotive back and it was a great ride.

Yes there is alot different between the logging in Wisconsin and Michigan and the pacific northwest. By the time the railroad logging was really getting to be used Wisconsin & Michigan were pretty much finished.
