Rivarossi/IHC Heisler... OK for On30? Helping a friend

Hi All

I have a work friend who has a Heisler and would like to get into On30. He lives a distance away so I have not actually seen this engine but I understand the engine is overscale possibly closer to S than HO.

Would there be a problem visual or otherwise mixing or matching one of these with an On30 set as a small logger engine? Would it be so far out as to be unbelievable?

TIA

Trevor

It will not be believable for O scale. Not without some O scale details. It will need an O scale cab, and O scale domes, light, stack, ect. The cab can be gotten from Banta Model Works and all the other details can be found at Precision Scale. They make nice On30 models, though, when all the details are added.

If I understand your question correctly, you’re wanting to know if an HO scale standard guage Heisler would be the right size for On30. No, it would not. It would be too small.

An On30 locomotive is an O scale 3-foot Narrow Gauge engine that runs on HO scale track. Because it is a model of a narrow gauge loco, it is smaller than a full-sized O scale model, but a standard gauge HO locomotive is only half the size of O scale. If you were to put the HO Heisler beside some On30 rolling stock, the difference in size would be unrealistic.

He should check into getting a Bachmann Spectrum On30 model such as their Two-Truck Shay or 28-Ton Two-Truck Climax.

Micro-Mark (http://www.micromark.com) has Bachmann Spectrum On30 engines and rolling stock on sale.

Trust me, you can make it fly. Here’s Ken Smith’s On30 conversion of a Rivarossi HO Heisler: http://www.freewebs.com/talltimber/locomotiveandrollingstock.htm

Looks dang good to me.
