Roadbed in transition areas

I’m starting to lay track in areas that will go through towns and be crossed by streets. What should I do about the height of the roadbed? Should I take it down to street level (i.e., no roadbed effectively) and, if so, when should this transition take place? Would it be just before entering town or much more gradual? How have others handled this issue?

Brad

I haven’t got to this point yet myself, but just think about how railroad crossings are in real life. Most of them, the track is still fully ballasted and the road goes up and over the top of the ballasting and RR ties. Some you can ramp your car over if going fast enough. Tranistion your road similar to what you see in rea life as roads meet tracks.

Good luck

I’m doing plaster roads and they get built up to track height at crossings. (with roadbed)
That’s how the real ones I see do it.

The only place I see a roadbed transition is onto a privately owned siding where there is a gentle transition to the track at grade. I have a couple of sidings on my switching layout where I have done this by stacking thin cardboard on a taper to fill in the void space.

Not that you endorse that sort of behavior…[:D]
