i know this has been asked before , does anyone know what direction the roanoke rail cam is facing. yhank you.
I believe it is facing WSW.
Crandell
I’m not good at directions, so I don’t know if facing south and facing west southwest are the same. But the Trains webcam FAQ page says the camera is facing south: http://trn.trains.com/interactive/web%20cams/~/link.aspx?_id=A500ED52CBAB49E58304966B1DBA47FB&_z=z
You can see the camera on google earth.com. Just enter Hotel Roanoke in the finder field and when that view stabilizes, use the zoom bar at upper right to zoom in to the pedestrian bridge crossing the street south of the hotel. There is a stairwell at the north end, and the camera is visible the closer you get, mounted on the south side of the stairwell structure eaves, looking down the street, but clearly facing WSW if you go by the visible compass at upper right above the zoom bar.
Crandell
Well, I guess that means that the Trains folks have trouble with directions also.
Crandell is correct. The camera looks WSW. The hotel is on the north side of the main line, with the heart of downtown located directly south from the hotel. Rail traffic coming from the right in the camera view is coming from the main yards to the west.
(I lived in Roanoke 30+ years.)
