How is teh N&W museum in this area? Tavelling.
You have two “Don’t Miss” museums in Roanoke.
The Transportation Museum has a lot of nice displays including several locomotives, among them the J 611 and A 1218; an NKP2-8-4 is there, plus a VGN 0-8-0 and a little N&W 2-8-0. There are several diesels, too. A tremendous number of artifacts is also on display.
Then you would go to the old passenger station where the O. Winston Link Museum is located. It is simply stunning.
Old Timer
According to my AAA guide, the actual rwy museum is at the site of the old N&W passenger station, and since it’s the official museum it ought to be pretty good. I think they have a GG-1 in addition to the kind of steam that ran their roads.
The “real” draw in the area, though, is the O. Winston Link museum, named for the man and chief contributor of those wonderful black-and-white twilight-of-steam photographs. This is said to be a must not miss; I haven’t been there but I too will be there later this month. The Link museum is downtown but in a different location from the company museum.
By the way, the NS Exhibit car will be in Rural Retreat later this month and Pulaski, both in Virginia, in early August. Log onto nscorp dot com and click on “Exhibit Car.”
Well, smack me with a wet mackerel! Listen to Old Timer, not me.
