How far east and west do the the UP and BNSF run the double tracks from the Rochelle Double Diamonds ?
If I know correctly, the UP runs double tracks all the way from Chicago through at least Omaha on their East-West main. They even run triple from at least West Chicago into the city. I’m pretty sure the BNSF runs double at least from Chitown to the Twin Cities.
The BNSF line is two main tracks for only a short distance either side of Rochelle, a total of about nine miles. There is more double track (and two-track CTC) beyond Savanna. But most of the line between Aurora and Savanna is single-track CTC.
The UP line is double-track (or two-track CTC) all the way to Missouri Valley, Iowa, except for a single-track bridge across the Cedar River in Iowa (which should have a second track added soon). West of Mo Valley, there are two routes to get to the UP’s main line at Fremont, after which it’s two or three tracks all the way beyond North Platte. Three tracks are coming to portions of the ex-CNW main line in Illinois and Iowa (Geneva to Elburn, Illinois, and around Marshalltown, Iowa, specifically).
3 tracks in Marshalltown??? Woohoooooooo!!!
