After a year (or so it seems) the powers that be have plunked down a North Wall. And the SP steamers will not longer be comin round the mountain when the come. They’ll be coming through the canyon when they come.

I look forward to them, Space. I know you are attacking your layout with a grim determination these days, and I am very much hoping that you are enjoying the experience. If anyone on this forum will profit from it, it would be you.

Well finally, I have the pitures. For the first time since late October, I have structures on the layout. The difference since then…no more plywood. I still have a lot of landscaping to do and many structures to build and restore.
So what took so long. The EZ track was 1/4 too high for all the structure’s loading docks and platforms, so I raised the landscape above the track. Then I ballasted and finished terra forming.
Here is, after all the hoopla, Rock Ridge Canyon. The loco is my son’s 2-8-0, Dixie.
The sweet smell of progress…
It’s looking good Chip. From thhe rock formations to your switch panel. Looking forward to seeing pictures of your town.

Very nice - we who have not yet scenicked anything salute you.
Thanks guys. I have to admit. I sure do like planting the greenery.
Looking good Chip. Did you carve all those rocks, use a mold or do something else?
Nick
Something else.
First I carved the foam to the shape I was looking for. Then I put 2 coats of drywall mud, fairly thick and sanded when it dried.
Then I scored completely through the plaster in roughly parrallel lines. Then I cracked the plaster using a small hammer.
Then using an airbrush I painted all the nooks and cranies black. With a brush I then first applied the main colors, then drybrushed both light and dark to achieve relief and depth.
I made this up myownself and am kinda proud of it.
You’re headed for Furlow territory, no doubt about it.
Here’s the road from points west and the Rock Ridge Station.
Where’s Mongo?
Mongo’s blew a throat gasket and is in the shop.
(fell and head broke off.)
Great canyon Chip. We have come a long way in the year or so we have been at this. Yes, planting this is fun. I also like your whimsical way with scenes. That is a great stage coach path.
Chip,
Looks GREAT!!! [:)] I LOVE the striations in the rock. Chip, that windmill must whir like a pinwheel when those westwardly winds come roaring up through the canyon. I like it! [tup]
Tom
Nice job on the scenery. What did you use for the canyon walls?
Go up 8 frames for the explanation of the technique.
Looks lively and rich, Chip/ The jumble rock looks well done!!!
May I ask if you are back “in the groove”? Do you feel better about this now? (…he asks, hopefully.)
Crandell,
I’ve got trains on the track, but I haven’t turned the power on. I feel like I’ve been making a birthday cake for 6 plus months and I’m finally putting the colored sprinkles on the icing. So far, everything has worked. I have some 200 trees ready to go and I’m afraid they are too big. But on the plus side, if they don’t work, I can always go the coastal sage scrub route.
