I think this story just underscores how dangerous working in the railroad environment can be. One minor slip-up and you’ve had it. If this guy had part of his leg amputated, I would guess that his chances of going back to work for the railroad are not very good.

I’m NOT trying to make light of this guy’s injury so don’t think of my comments in that way. Odds are that he will get a large payday for this injury. On my railroad we would say that he just won the UP lottery. Not a lottery that any of us wants to win. We all know that it could happen to any of us.
I hear you pig. If I win the BN lottery I want it to be minor so I can still live a good life. But like in the fire service if you make it out alive you won the best thing ever, another day above ground
To the rest of the Forum: FELA is how injury claims are settled on the railroad (Workmen’s Comp does not apply)…It unfortuately is a plaything of the trial lawyers and as much as PigFarmer and Rock want to talk about $$$$, you can also get skunked (zero compensation). FELA came into being well before Workmen’s Comp. and both systems are flawed and subject to abuse by both sides (owner/employee) and the ambulance chasers.
