RS-2, who's and where?

Hi everyone,

I’m a big fan of switchers, although I don’t have many, I do enjoy the SW’s and particularly the RS-2 or any RS for that matter. Can someone give me some info on who makes a good RS-2 (DC or DCC) and where some of the best prices are? I had a model power RS-2 in Conrail road and I really enjoyed it, but some of the railings have broken and of course it doesn’t run all that well and it’s a mother to put KD’s on, not that I’ve tried TOO hard.

Ok, there it is, lay it on me people…please.[bow]

PS, sorry, it’s HO Scale and I’m looking for road names consolidated with Conrail. Reading, NYC, Erie Lackawana, Penn Central just to name a few.

The Kato RS2 is excellent-smooth as silk and well detailed (in HO). The Atlas RS3 is good as well. The Athearn RS3 is reputed to be good as well but I have no first-hand knowledge of these. As for pricing, shop around.

I assume you’re talking HO Scale.

These are available from Walther’s.
Proto 1000: C&O, L&N, C&NW, CP, EJ&E, CGW, TP&W, UP. 99.98 Undec. 109.98

RS2

  • Kato made one(have not seen a run in the past few years) - very good running model.
  • P1K - In production - good running model.

RS3

  • Atlas - Great running model, some detail issues
  • Athearn(MDC) - Good running model, very good details/paint schemes

The Model Power RS2 was based on the old AHM model(which went through many stages). Atlas at once time also had and RSD4/5 model. Both Kato and P1K have also released the RSC2 variation of the RS2. Until the Atlas RS3 was released, all there was available was the rather bad AHM/MP RS2, and the metal Hobbytown RS3 & RSD4/5 kits for the most part. And of course some ‘brass’ models has been imported through the years. The Walthers/Life-Like P1K RS2 runs good and is available.

Just as an add-on to the original question I’m looking for RS-2’s & 3’s also but would like to know which companies offer DCC equipped locos. Kind of hard to tell from the various web sites which are DCC equipped and which are just DCC ready.

Thanks,
