Rusty Rails vs Floquil Paint Marker

Hello All

I just spent a half hour trying out my new Rusty Rails paint roller. After about 5 minutes it started to clog and coverage to that point was fair. The paint used came with the applicator.

I then broke out a set of Floquil enamel paint markers I picked up a year ago. The markers work great. In just over an hour I did the whole layout which is about 120 feet of track, including going over the Rusty rails paint.

IMO the Floquil markers are hands down better than the Rusty Rails painter.

I tried a roller applicator like that once and also promptly abandoned it as too messy. I’ve been brush painting my track, I do a little bit until I start getting annoyed then step away. The markers may be the best option, I should get a set.

They have a felt type tip and it applies enamel paint. I was pretty surprised how fast it worked. The tip is designed so it seats in the web of the rail . Just run the length of the rail and wipe the top off.

Go with the Floquil markers as a base coat.

I prefer the gray paint and the rust colored paint supplied with the Rusty Rail Painter as a top coat. The Rust colored paint that comes out of the marker is kind of odd looking, but it makes for a good base color for rusty tracks. I brush on the top coats.

The pack came with several markers. The rust one is best on sidings and looks great. For the main lines they have a color called rail brown which also looks good.

I was thinking about getting the Rusty Rails applicator but wasn’t sure it really worked that well. I have used the Floquil Paint Markers and like them but mine is out of paint and you have to buy them in sets of three. I started to use the Rail Brown marker and it doesn’t cover as well as a paint brush but it is faster. I haven’t tried my air brush yet but realize it will require more cleanup. I am currently painting by hand and as Randy said, when you get tired of it just step away and so something else. At this point I think I will pass on the roller method and stick with the paint brush until I pick up another Floquil set. I looks like it is a case of the ’ six of one or half a dozen of another’ scenario.

Sorry to be a pain, but there are a couple of posters who start out with “they”, or “the markers”. Which product were the posters referring to?

The Floquil markers are the one’s with the enamel paint and felt tip.
