Does anybody have a wiring diagram for the reverse unit / motor / pickup / headlight/ smoke ??
Probably already been discussed if anyone can point me in the right direction, i’D appreciate it.
I found out I’m pretty good at killing my engines and not taking notes
This might flag more responses if listed under the “Classic Toy Trains” forum category.
As far as diagrams, there is more than one way that Gilbert steam engines were wired. Knowing what model you have can help narrow down which wiring configuration it had. I suspect yours is probably a “5 wire” engine. That is, it was set up with 5 wires running between the engine and tender.
This diagram shows the different wiring configurations found on S gauge steam engines with smoke & reverse units:
This site has color-coded diagrams listed by locomotive number:
Hopefully between these, you can find what you need.

Those are great, easy to follow wiring diagrams. There are other engine configurations not covered by those diagrams, such as smoke in tender engines, those with air chime whistles, and those with relay operated tender whistles. All the physical arrangements and wiring diagrams are in the Gilbert Factory Service Manual. It is online at www.myflyertrains.net.

Huge thanks to you and amflytom, so, I think I need to visit my LHS for some fingers and grasshopper springs and brushes.
