S Gauge Roundhouse

I have been thinking about at an expansion to my AF layout, currently 5 X 10. If I expand I want room for a turntable and a roundhouse. I have read about increasing the height of an HO roundhouse by adding a 1/2 inch foundation, and adding on to the back of the structure for depth.

Has anyone made these kind of alterations, or is it better to start with an O guage unit and cut it down? Any ideas of a particular kit to work with would be great.

Thank you in advance,

George

Hi, I hate to reply to myself, but I will try to ask a different question.

Do any of you with an S layout have a roundhouse and a turntable? Can you share what you have and where you got it.

I am not looking for anything very elaborate, 3 - 6 stalls. 1900’s vintage look.

Thank you,

George

This is an S gauge turntable and round house that has been donate to the museum. At this time we have not yet installed it into our layout. The turntable is by Athean.

Spanky,

Thank you for the lead on the turntable, I will go searching. That roundhouse is pretty simple, I might try to build that one.

I went out and checked out your layout, very impressive, nice smoke from your locomotives too!

Doug Peck of Port Line Hobbies has a nice roundhouse kit, made by Twin Whistle. He used to sell a roundtable, but as of 6/22/08 he was sold out. Still, it is worth checking with him.

At any rate, you can see the roundtable at http://www.portlines.com/structurekits.htm#Roundhouse%20&%20Turntable.

I have dealt with Doug for many years and he is one of the good guys.

I’ve not tried to use one of them, but Atlas O makes an inexpensive turntable with a 24" diameter that operates on AC or DC and can be used for 2 or 3 rail operation. It should be able to convert to S without too much trouble and is mounted directly on the tabletop so you don’t have to cut a whole in the tabletop

Tommy,

Thank you for the response, I buy from Doug also, and agree he runs a good business.

I have looked at his roundhouse, as well as the Atlas o turntable, but will take another look.

I wonder if anyone on this forum has either piece and what they think of them?

Thanks again,

George
