Sad news for SOO fans

This is a bit old news, maybe 2 days old, but my uncle sent me this email.

On Saturday, July 23 Mr. Jeff Mast called me and said that CP W/B
train
#502 hit a scrap metal truck in Howell, Mich. This a CP train
operating over
the CSXT.
Power was two white SOO units, 6030 and 6009. On the 6030 nose is
bashed,
radiators damaged, hand rails damaged, compartment doors at rear of
locomotive bashed.
On the 6009, radiator damaged, rear walkway bent into truck. Crew
and
truckdriver ok.
Truck was carring a roll off box loaded with scrap. Train hit truck
at 37
mph, box flew up, landed on top of units damaging radiator sections.
Units pulled back to Brighton, Mich.

It doesn’t sound bad enough to retire them.CP could and should rebuild them.Maybe they repaint them into CPR colors…I’ve never seen a CP rail SD60 before.

Joe,
CP only has the SOO SD60s, they bought so many SD40-2s and GP38-2s that they never bought anything newer until the SD90MAC(U) in 1998 and the AC4400CW starting in 1995. After the SOO started buying SD60s, CP bought two 16-710 engines to power the exhaust fans for the Mount MacDonald tunnel and then they took a step back and bought the red barns, which turned out to be a big mistake. CP at one time had more SD40-2s than anyone else until passed by BN and UP. CP never bought a GP40 or a SD45.
Does anyone know if there are any Soo units still in white, and if so, how many ?

Well, SOO Line SD60’s are all still in paint. A lot of GP38-2’s are. We have a few bandits runnin around still. A little handful of SD40-2’s are in the same paint. And i dought CP will put there colors on them, because then they have to renumber and change all of this and that. Thats the reason a lot of them aren tpainted yet.

Alec

Are all of the 42 SD60s that came white still white ? Do you call it “Candy Apple” or is there another nickname ?

yea, they are still white. here , ill give you a link that will help you out. It says if its active, what paint scheme, stuff like that.

Sorry to hear about the SD60’s. Those would have come right through here.
And CP did actually own SD45’s. Sort of at least. Ex-DRGW 45’s rebuilt as SD40-3’s.

I agree with what you are saying, but I just can’t count it after the heart transplant.
Alec-Thanks for the link. It looks like he has spent at least 100 hours on that and must be frustrated because there is so much he doesn’t know to fill in the blanks. I’m going to send him some stuff that might help a bit.

LOL, thanks i just sent him a couple stuff to. Well im glad it helped.

Alec

Thank goodness the crew and truck driver were ok.
