Sakai Hudson and Pacific photos as found

As promised, here are photos of the H&P set I brought home from Saturday’s train show. I have not cleaned it or anything yet. It does seem to be a good runner. The reverse unit must need a little cleaning because it was working but not consistently. When I get time to take the shell off the loco I will add more pictures to this thread.

There are a handful of YouTube videos showing this set by other folks. There is also a late 2023 write up in CTT, but none of these say a whole lot. Maybe these photos will help those who are curious about this train.

The couplers are sheet metal and operate like a Gilbert American Flyer. Pushing the plate underneath upwards releases the knuckle coupler

Very nifty! Looks pretty good, a bit of playwear but looks like there’s a pretty minimal amount of rust. I’ve wanted one of these sets for a bit, but haven’t seen one yet for the right price. I do have a switch controller and one switch, somewhere.

I also have an incomplete example of the HO version of the Hudson & Pacific freight set. It’s in awful shape. It mirrored the O gauge one, had a 2-6-2 with tender, a Pacemaker boxcar, a Pegasus tank car, a gondola, and a caboose. Mine is missing the caboose, and a number of parts off the engine and cars. I’ll have to show it off some time, all the cars are lithographed tinplate.

All in all, great find, I hope you have good luck with it. The important thing is no zinc pest, some of their stuff had it (O gauge and HO gauge alike). Both of my HO 2-6-2s are affected, one much worse than the other.

VERY interesting and informative! This is a line of toy trains I’ve never heard of and obviously didn’t know anything about. The Sakai looks like a well-done budget line in the Marx vein, good quality for the money and very affordable.
Thanks for the shots!

A lot of my rolling stock is put away right now due to layout construction. When I can get it out again soon I will take some Marx Sakai side by side photos. They are amazingly close
