San Diego area hobby shops

I am going to be in San Diego for a few days later this week. What are the hobby shops that are worth visit. I model HO scale. I have a car and map available. I have been to the Balboa park layout and play to visit again. Thanks

Few and far between…

Near Balboa is the Original Whistle Stop on 4th. To the East on Spring St in La Mesa not too far of I-8 is Reed’s Hobby and up to the north of MCAS Miramar (I-15) on Community Rd in Poway is a new store, Rail Baron. Reed’s has the best selection, Whistle Stop has the most knowledge and Rail Baron is pretty darn new and still stocking up.

That’s about it.

When I was stationed in San Diego, I loved going to Reeds. I also used to make the trip to Long’s in Marino Valley. I believe there’s another place in Marino Valley, but I can’t think of its name.

In Moreno Valley, I think you mean TrainQuest…can’t remember which street, but it’s off the exit for March AFB. And there is Long’s Drugs way down Allesandro Rd. Long’s is kind of drying up. It’s gotten smaller in the past couple of years, almost entirely contained in the back room now. No knowledge base there anymore. TrainQuest is small but seems to be growing in stock availability. Also if in that area, the Orange Empire Railroad Museum is just to the south in Perris. It’s a neat place.

Thanks for the suggestions. It looks like I will be doing a little driving around and checking out several places.

I would suggest sending an email to TurboOne… he lives in SD

So do I.

I was in SD for business about a month or two ago, and I can recommend Reeds. A VERY helpful employee actually took digital pics of a module on display there and e-mailed them to me while I was in the store! Now THAT’S service!

BTW, I also checked out the Whistle Stop closer to downtown San Diego. I wasn’t impressed. Very small shop.

There are a few hobby shops on North San Diego Cty but nothing specifically devoted to trains. That’s why I order my stuff on line mostly.
