So, I happen to own a Bachmann EMD F9, I believe it originally came from a 1980 Diesel Hustler set. It runs reliably, but detail-wise it needs some correction in addition to separately-fitted grabs. Bachmann’s F9 shell has a number of inaccuracies, most notably that it has the doors and cab side windows of a first-run F7 and is lacking the oil cooler pipes on the roof. The Santa Fe version, which I have, is in passenger warbonnet (which I don’t think any of them actually carried, correct me if I’m wrong) rather than cigar band or freight warbonnet, but I don’t plan on changing that part.
I have references for most of the mods I need to make, but I don’t have ATSF-specific roof references. I also plan to get a Union Pacific shell to swap onto the chassis at some point, so UP F9 refs would also be appreciated.
Technically, UP rostered no factory built F9’s but did have upgraded F3’s that were reclassified as F9 or F9M, conversions occured between 1958 and 1959 with the addition of the 567C engine and D12 main generator, carbody mods included farr grills and 48 diameter roof fans. SF had no F9’s
Wrong! Santa Fe numbers 281-289 were EMD F9. I looked that up.
And carbody changes between late F7s and F9s were few, but there was the distinct change of the forward porthole’s position and the addition of a louvre ahead of it.
I couldn’t find listings for UP F9s, but I have seen photos of what is definitely an F9 in UP livery and lettering. I don’t know what gives there.
