Santa Fe ETTs for 1960's

On eBay, I wish to purchase a Santa Fe ETT from the 1960’s.

  • Were there system wide ETTs issued?

  • If not, what division(s) would cover all of New Mexico?

While I see several offered for sale, the divisions listed do not tell me what geographic area is covered. Certainly the Colorado Division would cover Colorado, but how much of Kansas and New Mexico?

Is there usually overlap with ETTs of neighboring divisions?

I have subsequently learned that as of the 1980’s there were at least these divisions:

Colorado Division
Eastern Division
Plains Division
New Mexico Division
Middle Division
Albuquerque Division
Valley Division
Northern Division
Illinois and Chicago Terminal Divisions

For such names as Eastern, Plains, Middle, Valley and Northern, it is hard for me to fathom what geographic areas are covered.

I am not sure of the time period, but I believe around 1950 the New Mexico Division ran from La Junta, CO through Belen, NM, down to El Paso. The Pecos Division ran between Clovis, NM and Belen or Dalies, NM, and down to Pecos, TX. The Albuquerue Division went from Belen or Dalies west to Needles, CA.

The Colorado Division was Dodge City, KS-La Junta-Pueblo-Denver.

I’ll check when the New Mexico Division moved-- seems to me it was around 1960 that the Colorado Division extended westward to Albuquerque and the former Pecos (and some more, probably) became the New Mexico. If you see a low-numbered early-60s Colorado Div it probably includes the former New Mexico (except the Albuquerque-El Paso maybe). Albuquerque Div always covered Belen/Albuquerque to Seligman, then around 1950 it extended to Needles when the Arizona Division disappeared.

I could use some help in deciphering those TT numbers as well. I am interested in the ETT’s that would cover all routes in New Mexico (possibly AZ and CO as well) for 1963/4 and 1966/7, plus or minus one year. I would not be interested in an ETT before 1962 unless there was not another issue until several years later.

All routes would include Clovis-Carlsbad and the P&SF extension to Pecos, TX.

Were ETTs then issued semiannually as PTTs were, or did an ETT last for a period for more than a year?

I am also interested in the ETT that would cover the D&RGW for Summer, 1963, only. Being a smaller road, I assume there was one ETT for the entire D&RGW system, else my interest would be for the Royal Gorge Route. Thanks.

Carefull there, everything changed by '63…and then again around 67… Colorado Division adjoined the ATSF “Western Division” into the 1960’s, headquartered at Syracuse, KS…at one point, The Colorado Division (Pueblo HQ), The Western Division (Syracuse HQ) and the New Mexico Division (Las Vegas NM HQ) all met at La Junta into the 1960’s.

All of those divisions started a staged shift to La Junta, moving into the former Asst. GM’s office building in La Junta. This was interupted by the '65 Flood. The Pueblo DOB was moved to LJ first followed by Syracuse and then Las Vegas. The CTC Plant at Las Vegas was moved to LJ in a day and a half over a weekend. The La Junta building served at the Colorado Division DOB until the next consolidation in 1988 and still exists. (Syracuse KS DOB, the yard and the Harvey House there are gone…The DOB at Las Vegas is gone, the new New Mexico Division moved to Clovis. The DOB at Pueblo was gone by 1969.)

Thanks for the information. I had not realized CTC and divisions were in flux over the Santa Fe network for the years of my interest.

What is a DOB?

I was surprised to see that New Mexico Div Timetable #1 in 1960 was still the old territory, La Junta to El Paso. So the change was sometime between then and 1964. No need for employee timetables out here to change every March/April and Sept/Oct, since transcon trains ran on Standard Time year-round.

There’s a Colorado Div #1 for 9/61 on eBay now-- betcha that’s the first one to extend to Albuquerque.

(edit: looking at the list of officials it does extend to Albuquerque (or Hahn or whatever))
