Scalecoat Model RR Paint

Does anyone here use Scalecoat Model RR Paint on their models? If so, how is the quality of the paint? Are the color matches accurate?

In my opinion (as a professional painter) there are no more accurate or better-covering paint sthan Scalecoat. If you want to use this product, make sure you visit their website and follow their directions.

Scalecoat is fantastic paint. Leaves a beautiful finish, and can be airbrushed or brush painted very easily.

Be sure to use Scalecoat II for all your plastic models. Scalecoat I is for metals, not plastic.

It dries to a glossy finish that is perfect for decals. You can then dull coat the whole thing for a realistic appearance.

Here are some G scale cabeese I just painted with Scalecoat paint:

sounds great…thanks!

I believe their weathering colors are dullcote.(right?)

Hey Lothar!

Dullcote is Testors’ brand name, but yes, the weathering colors are flat (matte).

Scalecoat is excellent paint. As mentioned above use Scalecoat 1 for metal as it attacks plastic and requires baking it to get it to dry.

Scalecoat 2 for plastic works well. Scalecoat says a primer isn’t needed but I tried that and it takes too much paint that way. i use Scalecoat MofW Grey for a primer then apply the finish colour.

It takes some time for Scalecoat paint to dry but the gloss finish is ready for decals with no extra gloss finish added. Use only their thinner for thinning. Paint store Lacquer thinner can be used for clean up.

For metalizing I’ve been using Scale Coat II.

IMHO it covers very well and leaves a smooth, slick surface when applied properly.

One suggestion for airbrush application: For thinning, the suggestion on the bottle states

“a good startup mixture would be 2/3 paint to 1/3 thinner”.

As has been suggested several times on this forum, a 1 part paint to 1 part thinner ratio yields very smooth, glossy results.
