Scenery colors

Here is my question, l like to stained all the mountain scenery with a flat tan color and then add acrylic color washes for color and visual texture. What color washes sure l used without over doing it.

Thanks

Welcome to the forums.

Your colors will depend on the area you are modeling. Around here there is a wide variety of colors of rock, other locations have less variety. Some of our rock ledges are very dark brown, others very light grays. Some of those have conciderable rust color from iron laden water seeping out of the rock.

Grays, raw and burnt umber and raw and burnt sienna are good colors to start with for many scenic washes. They are available in the craft paint section of most craft stores at reasonable prices.

Go out and look at some rocks if you are modeling an area near you. If the area is not handy, look at some photos. One thing to remember, it is much easier to add more color than to cover if you have used to much. Don’t use strong colored washes, repeat if the color is too light. Also, remember to let your washes dry, as the color will change as the area dries.

Good luck,

Richard

Thanks cowman, l like the way the scenery was done on Mike Danneman D&RGW Layout ( March 1996 MR) Its more colorado rockies is what l’m looking for.

Don’t forget black. I use a wash of India Ink in alcohol on rock castings. This thin liquid collects in the cracks, and highlights them very nicely. It adds “depth” to the surface.
