I have several buildings on my layout with smoke generators in them & when I use them they create a smell my wife can’t stand, I’m not to keen on the smell either. Has anyone tried scented oil in these generators without damageing them? I wonder if the scented part of the oil would gum up & burn out the heater as the correct oil is a very light mineral oil.
A little clarification would be helpful. Are you asking about scented oils, like the ones burned in lamps? Not sure about those.
I do have a scented oil made specifically for model rr locos, mine is for a Lionel, but I’d think a smoke generator was a smoke generator at least in such small sizes. The fellow that sells them has several different ones, including a coal burning steam loco (what I have). Not sure of the others he has.
Good luck,
Richard
Dept. 56 use to sell scented oil for the Bachmann trains they sold. Pine oil is good for around christmass time. I have used them with on problem. You can also use a drop on vinilla extract in your existing bottle of oil. Shake it up. It does not take much just a drop.
A drop of your after shave will also work.
I have used the above in Bachmann, Seuth, Lionel, an MTH smoke units with no problems.

I have seen smoke fluid that is pre-scented from the factory. Don’t remember the brand. Perhaps they would know on the Toy Train forum. I believe I saw at least two brands with train related as diesel oil and wood burning, but one brand also had non-train things like Apple Pie, Cinnamon Roll, Christmas, candy cane, barbeque, coffee, vanilla, eggs and bacon, etc. there were 12 in all.
