Schenectady, NY LHS

I really don’t have a “local” hobby shop - closest LHS being 75 miles in a couple of directions. This time of year I try to hit a couple train shows in the Albany, NY area. In the past I have swung by ModelTrainsandPart.com in Schenectady, NY after the show. I heard a rumor that the proprietor of MT&P.com passed away earlier this year, so I was wondering if anyone in the area knew if the shop is still open, or if, as I fear, it has closed its doors… The website is still, up, but it doesn’t appear to have been updated in quite some time.

What happened to Mohawk? There used to be two shops I’d visit when I traveled to Albany. One was a smokey shop near GE and the other was Mohawk in Schenectady.

Why don’t you just call them and ask??? The phone # is on the web page.

I go to JP’s Trains and Hobbies in Latham, 277 Troy-Schenectady Rd. Paul is always good for a free cup of coffee or tea, most Saturday afternoons there’s a pot of chilli on the stove (especially good in the winter) and of course lots of trains.

Lenny of Mohawk Valley retired to Florida, the shop is soon to close. The store in Scotia closed a couple of years ago, everything always smelled of pipe smoke.

Model Trains and Parts is closed, all the stock is still inside the store but it has not been open all year. Mohawk Valley is still there, I was there today but the building is for sale and is expected to close by the end of the year. JP’s in Latham is a good place to go for anything you need and even a good laugh now and then. The owner seems to be a real good guy and takes care of his customers.

I agree with Jay, JP’s in Latham is a great place to go. Paul the owner, and all the guys that hang out there are really great. Coffee’s always on, or soda if you want something cold. As far as the other two, I tried to call MTP’s the other day, but there was no answer, so I assume with the other info provided it has closed. (?) As far as Mohawk Valley, I didn’t go there all summer, but when I went in in early September, I was surprised, it seemed as though they had more stuff on the shelves, than they had ever had in the past. (?)

I’ve been to JP’s and Mohawk Valley RR and agree they are both great places. I would stop @ MTP after the show because it was open on Sundays, and nearly on my way home. It’s too bad to hear that MVRR will soon be gone too. I’ve been to JP’s a couple of times, and they alway have great stuff in the back room. I don’t care much for the 2nd hand smoke though. MTP always had a HUGE selection of BB kits, second hand treasures and consignments…they will surely be missed
