scrap yard?

Hey everyone- Was wondering if anyone possibly had any pics of their scrap yard/junk yard? I need some inpiration for my scrap yard that I am beginning to add to my layout.

There was an article in MRM a few months back that had a ‘how to’ article to add a scrap yard, that I really was interested in reading again, but I cannot find that issue! If anyone has it in pdf format, I’d love to get my hands on it… Or even if you know what month issue that was in… I know its not Oct., Nov. or Dec. 08.

Anyhow, any help or insiration would be appreciated!

Go to train shows and but used vehicles as cheaply as possible and then smash and deform them to look like junked cars.

Get several colors of spray paint (one of them being red primer) and spray heavy duty aluminum foil with it. When it dries, rip it into smaller pieces and put it into a blender with some water and shred it (might want to wait til the wife is out of the house shopping.) Drain off the water and you now have shredded metal.

Soak steel wool in vinegar for several days. You will get a very rusty solution that can be used to make things look rusty. DO NOT get it on the track.

1960’s and earlier get a crane and put a magnet on it. 1970’s and newer get a crawler back hoe with finger grips instead of a bucket.

Think about the kind of fence you want around the yard. I made this wood plank fence out of coffee stirrers, and applied home-made decals for the “Air” and “Moxie” signs:

The fence behind this clam bar is Walthers Cornerstone chain-link. I first use rattle-can silver, and then I applied Dul-Cote and some weathering powders.

I’m looking for scrap yard pictures, too. For my new Diamond Valley I will have a scrap yard.

Here’re pics from an old one - now sold:

… and the other side …

thanks for the replies and pics. I just realized that the write up I was referring to was in a walthers monthly flyer that came in the mail… It was 3-4 issues ago and had a section about modeling a scrap yard. If anyone has that and can scan it, I would love to see it again.

Looked at walters.com and they only offer the current issue to view.

Again, thanks a lot and happy new year to all!
