SD40-2 High Hood

Hi,

Could you guys tell me, does anyone make a High Hood SD40-2 in HO scale?

Thanks,

dekruif

No.

Many people have made one; see:

The October 1984 cover of Model Railroader for one of Jim Six’s first high hood SD40-2 models.

Cannon & Co makes a nice high hood kit.

This?

Also where did Southern place thier snowplows, front or back?

Thanks,

long hood forward

No, But I made a Ns sd40-2 high hood out of a athearn sd40-2 and I used a cannon & company high hood kit!

Thank you,

That is another project that I want in the long run.

A six axle EMD Southern “Tuxedo” unit with a high nose. Either an SD45 or SD40-2. The prototypes were sharp looking units.

The Cannon kits look nice and I can imagine splicing one onto a P2K or Atlas unit.

Since the Southern ran their locos both ways almost equally, if the loco had snow plows it had them on both ends.

It’s ironic that no high hood models of these were produced but that someone (Bachmann I think) made a high hood GP50 model, and then put on it a scheme for a railroad that couldn’t have possibly owned one! (E-L)

Atlas makes a high hood GP38, GP40 and SD35. Walthers/Proto has just released a HH GP30 and Athearn will be releasing a HH GP40-X. If us SOUTHERN and N&W modelers empty the shelves of these models maybe the model companies will see their way clear to produce more.

BTW it takes about 15 minutes ti install a cannon & co. hh on a P2K SD45. The hard part is the paint job.

Bob, sounds like you’ve done this. If you did a Southern unit, which paint brand did you use and did it blend in accurately?

Could you give a link to a Sd40-2 high hood kit.

Thanks,

Kato made one, i have 2 of them, undecorated models with both parts for high and low hood versions. Unfortunately (for me) they are in HO scale, i model N…i am planning to use them for static models in a display case i have, keep your eyes on ebay, both of mine came from there-expect to pay about 100 bucks for one. Hope this helps (lemme guess…NS or SRR modeler?) Azure

I model Southern and want to convert one to a high hood. I’m looking at a BLI.

Hehe, i model NS and the hi nose SD 40s that trundle right by my house every day are definately my favorite locos. Atlas did GP-40s, and GP38s in high nose, and now a B23-7 hi nose as well. Hope this means a SD-40 soon…if they do (please please in N scale too!) I would sign up for 5 or so of them.

I see that several people have mentioned conversion kits for these engines, anyone know if one of these kits was ever produced for N scalers?

My SD45 was an undecorated one. I used Scalecoat II engine black over which I applied Microscale decals for the stripe and lettering.

What he meant was to cover up the"holes" in the decal, where you had to poke it to let air out from underneath the decal.

Well, if you are very careful when pricking the stripe to let the air out it won’t leave a noticeable spot but if you need to touch up areas I use a modelmaster paint for aircraft models. It’s a very light grey used to paint airforce planes of the 1950’s. I’ll look up the color and post it later.
