SD40-2

I need some infromation on the SD40-2. I’ve been looking for the date the SD40-2 was built, and can’t find one. I know it was sometime before 1975, but don’t know the exact year. I also need to know what year BN took delivery to these engines.

Also, What year did the F45 come out? It was before 73, but what year?

Thanks yall.

The CNW took delivery of it’s first SD40-2 by September '73.

Looks these things up on google

http://www.google.ca

It’ll find you information on anything, I use it whenever I am searching for info.

The dash2 series started around 1972. This is when earlier SD40, SD45 etc. models
were updated by EMD. They had better electrical circuitry, I believe. The SD40-2 had a larger frame but not a much larger hood, thus the really large end platforms (notably
th back). They were the largest selling locomotive model ever(not sure if that title still stands) and were built into the 80`s. Nowadays, unfortunately, they are becoming
somewhat rare. There is nothing like the sound of a SD40-2 climbing a grade with a heavy train. They were 3000 horsepower, good for the time, but not as impressive nowadays.

the people who say they like the sound of a sd40 climbing a grade are also the ones who never sat in one while this was going on. the noise in the cab is unbarable. i am glad we dont have these units in the lead that often anymore. but i will say this any emd is great listening to going up a hill. the sound of power being put to the rails and getting the work done. a GE well wake me when we get to the top tomorrow

I recall hearing about the F45 first appearing on the ATSF about 1968 or so, with it’s first assigmnent being the new crack Super C intermodal freight from LA to Chicago. The FP45 first appeared about the same time on the Super Chief/El Capitan train, I believe.

All the ATSF FP45s were built to order 5731 during December 1967.

The CMStP&P five units were built to order 7121 in December 1968.

These were the only FP45s built.

There are a lot of BN SD40-2s, but 6325, built to order 5803 in February 1972 seems to be the first one built for BN. It might not be the first SD40-2 ever built, but 6324, built November 1971, was an SD40, so it was a very early one.

After Amtrak took over in 1971, the FP45s were used on the Super C as well. Speeds of 90mph were reported on some mainline stretches. They were 3,600 h.p units. Same EMD 20 cylinder engine as the SD45. Great tractive effort but fuel mileage was not that great.

I checked the builders plate on an SD40-2 I rode behind on Amtrak’s Desert Wind. The date was Jan.1972,the first month they were built.

all I know is that I saw a 40-2 yesterday

I haven’t been much help! Here are the dates of F45s!

The ATSF F45s were built, half each on orders 7105 and 7114 from June until July 1968.

The GN F45s were built, half each on orders 7121 and 5750 in May, June and August 1969. Those delivered to BN were built on orders 5762 in August and September 1970 and 5774 in April and May 1971.

I was on a BNSF SD-40 last night south out of chicago. I looked at the locomotive report and it was built in 1966??? It seems a little early. Maybe it was rebuilt from something else. [%-)]

The SD40 was originally introduced in 1966 when EMD brought out the 645 line of locomotives which included 9 (!) domestic models. The various Dash-2 upgrades came in 1972.

Engine decible noise is regulated by earplugs, available at your nearest pharmacy, deductable as job tools. Cost per unit( like the cost for a high-short-hood), give cardboard interiors, (their had to be something), the Seaboard Coast Line engineers wished for high-backed seats, so the SCL SD40-2’s had’em. I’ve seen more than one crew with earplugs, and radio is no excuse, for if their was no complaint about the noise, we would not have the “I” cab. Any EMD Diesel, after a million miles will sound like a 327 Chevy short block(at least like my buddy build’s em’). Anyway, watchout, there’s a local with an SD40 comming soon near you! Enjoy your sd!

The SD40-2 officially began in January 1972. Kansas City Southern #637 is the very first SD40-2 built (Units 637-646).

For the Burlington Northern Railroad and it’s subsidiary, Colorado & Southern, their first order was in February 1972. The BN is also the only railroad to purchase SD40-2’s from General Motors Diesel Division in London, ON (8074-8089, 7167-7205, 7206-7235)

The SD40-2 was NOT just for American, Canadian, and Mexican use. Material Y Construcciones Sociedad Anónima [MACOSA], (Valencia, Spain) built 46 SD40-2’s (3711-3746) for the Central Railway of Brazil in 1979. Unlike the North American units, these SD40-2’s were built to Irish Gauge standards (5ft., 3in./1,600mm).

Brazilian builder Equipamentos Villares Sociedade Anônima [EVSA], (São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo, Brazil) built 29 SD40-2’s (401-429) for the Carajás Railway in Brazil from May 1985 to October 1989 also on the Irish Gauge.

The Bauxite Company of Guinea (Chemin de fer Boké) purchased 3 SD40-2’s (107-109) from EMD from October 1974 and May 1975.

The National Railways of Mexico ordered SD40-2’s from September 1972 to Feburary 1986.

U.S. Production ended in July 1984 when Soo Line 6623 was built. Canadian Production ended in July 1985 when BC Rail 767 was built. Mexican Production ended in February 1986 when National Railways of Mexico 1004 was built. International/World Production ended when Carajás Railway 429 was built in October 1989.

The SD40-2’s production lasted for 17 years…beating the SD70M’s production of 12 years.

The F45 came out in June 1968 first for the Santa Fe and ended with the Burlington Northern in May 1971.

HAy send it my way will ya’?

The SD40-2 was manufactured from 1972 through to 1988…last units I believe were the red barns for CP built by GMD in London.
