My favorite locomotives (the SD45’s and SD45-2’s) are few and far between in my part of South Georgia. Are they all going to be phased off of CSX? If so, what new locomotives are going to take their place?
Any CSX SD45 is long gone and there are very few if any pure SD45-2s left. We had one here in Louisville for a time used at the Osborn Yard, but it is gone. Best bet for SD45s and SD45-2s is watch the lease locomotives as you can see some there. CSX does have a couple of SD45-2 with 16 cylinder engines that are rated at 3000 horsepower.
Hey, The SD45 is my Favorite loco too. I love the Flared Radiator on those thing, and the sound. Wow! Anyway, ALL WC SD45s are gone. [:(] Pretty soon the SD45 will be phased out. I know MRL has a fleet, and a railroad in New Your has a small fleet too. I’ve also heard that UP has some SD45-2s running in Utah. I’m not sure where BNSF has there Ex. ATSF ones.
Falred Ratator - do you mean Flared Radiator?
Sorry about that. I forgot to spell check. [D)] Thanks.
The only SD45-2s the CSX would still have left are the x-EL units acquired in the CR split. They were assigned to the Shared Assets area in Jersey. They have since been re-engined to SD40-2 specs.
Well, BNSF last I heard was getting rid of all their SD45-2’s. Just a rumor I heard though. And NS still ave a few SD40-2’s actully quite a few compared to other roads. (Class 1’s) Mike
The SD45s are my favorite second generation diesel.Southern Pacific never bought any new straight SD45-2s,only tunnel motors, but they did aquire some ex-Conrail exx Erie Lackawanna units. They looked good in the speed lettering scheme.[8D]
Neil, CSX still has CSX 8954, a ex SCL engine. He was in the Florida area in June. CSX sold 8976 to Ohio Central and has been confirmed. Many of the SD45-2’s have been rebulit or reclassified to a SD40-2. CSX 8886 and 8889 are two of them.

Several years ago, I was passing by UP’s North Salt Lake yard in Utah, and spied a BNSF train with five ex-Santa Fe locomotives getting ready to head north. An SD75M in the Warbonnet paint scheme was leading a SD45-2, and three SD45s. I hurried home, got the family loaded into the car, and made my way back to the yard a few minutes before the train departed. We followed the train up to the Phillips 66 refinery in West Bountiful where we pulled over to the side of the road to watch the train go by in all it’s sound and glory.
Too bad I didn’t have my camera on hand!
