SD70ACe

What are the experiences with this engine so far? Are there any opinions formed yet? Or is it too early?

I never saw one with flames shooting out the stack[:D]!

I first ran into them a couple of them a few months back up in Cheyenne:

Personnally, I think they look pretty cool. Kind of bulldoggish. No non-sense. As for how they run and such, you’ll have to talk to someone else. I can only provide a railfans opinion. [:P]

Yea, they do look a bit more boxy, sort of a mix between traditional EMD hood units and the 90’s reinforced cab units (or whatever they are called).

In case someone is interested (and didn’t see it yet), at www.train-sim.com, in the file library, there is a 70-ish Mb 20-minute video with stereo sound of this locomotive when it was on display somewhere, most of the time it is idling and people are walking around it etc., but toward the end it moves. Just go to the sitemap, and find the library, you’d have to register to enter it though.

It has a beautifull clean resonant horn!

Same with me. I haven’t seen any yet but maybe that’s because I’m not around any UP mainlines. UP does have trackage rights down the BNSF through my area but so far I haven’t seen any SD70ACes…usually Dash 9-44CWs or Dash 8-40CWs. I’m sure BNSF probably won’t buy any since they have their new Evolutions. Although, UP has Evolutions and SD70ACes…

On looks though they are cool. The UP paint job with flag is the best paint job on it so far IMO. UP’s Heritage paint schemes are neat color-wise but don’t resemble the railroads’ original styles.

You are definitivley right about the paint job

beautifull

i like them i hope some one in Australia will buy them so i get to see them up close

I got to ride in my first SD-70-ACe a couple of weeks back while on the job. I don’t recall the exact number, but it was a CSX unit. Performance-wise it did okay, but not quite as good of a job pulling as the SD-70-MAC’s do… but then again we have some short, but steep grades on our line.

I was most impressed by the combination of the engineer’s desk and desktop digitial display screen and the old AAR 26L control stand in the cab.

BHP ore already has some coming.
