Got another one for the forums: Where exactly does the air horn on an SDP40 belong? The model I have has it going on the cab. A picture that I have seen of the BN Bicentennial Unit (1976) has it appearing to be between the 1st and 2nd fans on the rear of the engine (behind the dynamic brake hatch). Given that this engine was a GN-only prototype, I would tend to believe the picture, but anything is possible.
As usual, any help the forums can provide would be welcomed.
The GN’s SDP40’s had their fans mounted between the first and second radiator fans. This was typical practice for GN at the time.
Photos of BN SDP40’s show the horns in this position also. Sometimes. And also on the cab roof, but towards the rear. Sometimes. BN MAY have mounted the horns ahead of the radiator cooling fans. Sometimes. But I couldn’t turn up a picture.
I HAVE seen a BNSF SDP40 with horns in this position.
I had better start writing “In the future I must do my homework properly and with due diligence" 1000 times Ed. Even the photos show the horn between first and second cooling fans.[sigh]
Cheers, the Bear.[:$]
