Seaboard Air Line - Image Gallery
As a child, I frequently took the Silver Meteor between Washington’s Union Station and the Seaboard station in Columbia, SC. with my parents from 1940 (when I was 1) until about 1949 when I was 10. I was always excited about these trips and did not sleep very much on this essentially over-night train trip. I still remember the smell of the diesel exhaust, particularly at Columbia when the train would pull in for the return trip to DC. Also remember how crowded these trains were during the war with service men everywhere.
