Sealing rocks?

Quick question for the masses. I picked up a Woodland Scenics “how-to” rock molds kit for diorama. It went well, surprisingly actually. I didn’t realize rock molding as you could say was so simple. I used to provided paints and colored them. A few washes, and I have the results that I want for this go around. After reading the directions though, it doesn’t mention sealing the rocks. I’m used to, and enjoy sealing my weathering powders. Is this needed for this though? I feel like the porous rocks and the washes act like a stain. I’m just not sure though.

Hi Kyle,

I too like to use washes on “rocks” and I do not seal them. I suppose you can dilute some matte medium and use that as a sealer if you wish.

I sealed my rocks with WS scenic cement. (Same as diluted white glue). I also used the WS pigment paints.

I’ve seen guys seal them with a coat of white or a light earth tone latex paint, not for me i just paint em or wash em and for get em. I only feel the need to seal things such as rolling stock or locomotives that are handled on a regular basis. Structures and landforms etc. I don’t feel the need to seal them for the most part. I imagine a coat or two of dull coat wouldn’t hurt as a sealer.

A WS booklet I obtained some time ago covers the rock moulding and paint washes… and then says to use their WS scenic cement. I’m not real sure it is needed, and for sure, be sure the coloring is finished before sealing.

I have never used a sealer on my rocks after colouring them.

Never thought it was needed. Some of the scenery near the edges of the layout can get worn or chipped I doubt a sealer will prevent this.

As my Hydrocal rocks are used outside, after painting and applying a dark wash to provide visual depth, I seal them with UV resistant matte finish in a rattle can from ACE.
