Selling items at the train show??

The Big E show is coming up soon and I am planning on attanding. I was wondering if i could bring some stuff and find a buyer there like a stand that would but it?? It is a set of N scale Kato Bethgon Coalporters in the NS scheme. they are pretty new. (A month or so) and maybe some unused Ho stuff. Have you guys ever tryied this?? Thanks in advance. Tim

I would doubt this is allowed, nor do I think any seller would buy them.

Reasons: Sellers come to sell, not buy. Since these are used models, they are more the type that need to be examined and appraised. Even if they are new, they would not be buying to stock their shop, because any purchases they make they want their dealer discount.

To sell them at the show, you’d need to get your own dealer table.

I’m really not quite sure why you want to sell them, because you will not get full price.

I got the coal cars in a trade for a Kato engine also In NS. I want to sell thme because they are not really what i model. and I have no intentionsin buying a NS engine to pull them. I also HATE Kato couplers. I could change thme over to Atlas but i do not want to. Iust do not really want them[:(!] Tim

I don’t think they’d let you. Most train shops buy used stuff, but your not going to get much.
Try to find a private buyer or do the Ebay thing.

Yes I have, I bring it allong and leave it in the car “train items”. I ask around then and 9 times out of 10 I get it sold. Or if I see someone looking for items I might have brought with me and they cannot find it or want a better deal, out to the car we go. I’ve done sales at some smaller train shows a few times over the years, not my favorite thing to do, had some stuff stolen a few times.

Most of the big dealers or small ones like to buy up things you might have, but know what its worth to you before they throw a low number at you as far as $$$. Sometimes they give you this story about its not worth to much. Then put it on display and resell it an hour latter for double the money. So do some checking around and find a good dealer that is willing to give you a good deal.

The last train show I went to was last fall, there was a vender there that was selling BB Arhearn engines, he had about 300 to 400 of them stacked up all over the place and about 50 on display powered units. They were selling between $18 to $24 each, was a large crowd gathering around his table and the money was flying all over. I saw a guy I knew over there I knew and went to see what he bought. He had 5 GP9 powered units, and I asked him to let me see one. First thing I noticed it did not feel as heavy as it should be, after opening the box I did not see the flywheels from the bottom of the chassis. I took my car key and poped the lower truck cover off then, and low and behold, it was a stripped out gear case, he left the motor mounts in the chassis though. After presenting this to the vender in veiw of all the people buying, he looked at me like he could kill me, when I told him"Nice try buddy!!!" He was not selling the display models, but would give you the one’s he had in stacks which came in the right loco and road name and powered units. But the bad part is he had stripped the motor and drive gears out of it. He was asked to refund money and leave the building.

Don’t get me wrong, there are allot

Put it in a backpack with a sign on it saying what you got, then walk around if anyone is interested they will stop you.

diffenitally bring them, the big e is one BIG show, many vendors, you’ll have to ask around, but you might find someone, maybe a little swapping might work. also try your lhs, he may let you sell on consignment.

Tim, I know you made the trade, it was with Keith. I know.

I would point out that selling out of your car can be considered illegal at some shows. Since you did not "rent " a table, you are not “licenced” by the show organizers to be there and they may well tell you to leave the property. This is a bigger deal at shows where the product is worth a lot more money, but the same priciples apply.

Thats funny, I aquired a whole bunch of train items in HO scale many years ago and discovered 2 brass loc’s in the lot and 3 brass cars, that were old. I did not know anything about the brass engines and cars but brought them to the show to get an idea of what they were worth. Talked to about 10 different venders and got all kinds of numbers thrown at me as far as $$$ is concerned for value. Got ready to leave a few hours later and had a person following me out to the car. It was one of the venders who quoted me $250 for the whole set of brass items, he held out $500 in cash and said this is a fair deal, so I took it. Wife and I went back a few hours later and discovered he had them up for sale and was asking $1250 for all the items I sold him in brass and sold them later that day. So its ok for a vender to make offers and buy things from the public, but the consumer should not do this because it is illegal. I don’t think so. I have swap items at train shows and been offered more money for an item than I paid for an item at a train show before I got out the door.

Most of the train shows I go to are swaps and small venders, I have been a vender of and on for quite a few years, its a cut throat business swap meets and train shows.
