I need to get some elevated platforms for in my round house. The elevated kind with railings that sit next to the tracks. Anyone have any links to any of these? I don’t know the correct name to search for so I’m coming up blank on the Walthers site.
Actually that is a good question - diesel servicing buildings certainly (RMC recently had some articles about EMD designes for diesel service building - all had several elevated internal platforms), but roundhouses in the steam era with long internal service platforms? I can’t image that being that common in North America (maybe retro-fitted roundhouses for diesel or electric locomotive servicing…?), but would like to see the layout of the platforms if it was (I suppose the interior platforms would have to be tapered as it nears the door to fit).
Some of the finest catwalk, platform, ladder, etc equipment I have ever seen as well as used, is by Tichy. Contact them online for a complete listing of their product line. I use their products extensively for any of my projects that call for it. Without Don’s line, I could not have built the coaling tower I built (New Haven at Cedar Hill).
Traincat has a line of etched brass kits, including an engine service platform, grated walkways, and tank car loading platform. I haven’t worked with any of their kits, but they do look good in the company’s website.
Hmmm…Guess you guys are right. About the only good pics I can find are of the Steamtown RH and NO platforms. Just those tall movable stairways. Those would be EZ enough to make. I thought I had seen photos of them, but I guess not. Another thing I see that I was wrong about is the tracks inside. I thought they would just be rails in concrete, but I see they were actually rails/ties and ballast inside. Makes my life easier!
Thanks for all the links! I can still use them for my fueling rack and diesel back shop building. Love all that brass stuff, but I don’t think it’s in the budget.
Yeah, I know that. I haven’t decided how to model that yet. I may just cut the ties out and paint black underneath to give the illusion of a pit. I don’t feel like paying $18 x three for the Peco pits and I don’t own a router. Not really going to see them anyhow.
WM, Excellent job! That platform looks so realistic. I worked in the transit industry 15 years and your model looks incredibly similar to some of the platforms in the shop I worked at.
