shay help needed

Well my project shay arrived the other day. It came with a pleathera of extra parts but was missing some essential parts. For instance(this is the roundhouse model by the way) the square metal driver shaft and one of the insterts that go into that and connects to the trucks. Also missing is the second have of that particular linkage. Also missing was the main drive shafts under the loco. Also the motor spline that connects to the reciever on the main gears is split. Any way to fix this or were to find the parts to finish it. I looked at nwsl but I have no idea what it is I am looking for.

Thanks for the help

Mike

Maybe this will help a little. http://stores.ebay.com/RIVER-CITY-RAILROAD-RCR_LOCOMOTIVES_STEAM_PARTS_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZQ2d1QQfsubZ171783319QQftidZ2QQsclZ1QQtZkm

Ebay can be ‘quicksand’ for ‘bargain hunters’.

MDC was sold to Athearn. WHO knows what parts Athearn has in stock. No matter what, it will cost you more money. MDC originally made kits.

Their 30 footers were cute.

Have you checked the Roundhouse Yahoo group for parts? I bet they can steer you the right way and help you with those missing parts. The best thing to do with NWSL is to call them direct and explain what you have. If they still offer those replacement gears they will be glad to help you.

GS

Would you be interested in a new, complete, MDC kit of the Rio Grande Bumblebee paint scheme Shay kit? I have one that I will never assemble since Bachmann came out with one that runs so much better.

The new Roundhouse has no parts of any kind for the older MDC series. I have seen quite a few discussions concerning the MDC Shay.

I have purchased from the mentioned ebay seller. No issues. They picked up the remining MDC stock.

All that seems to be left are the Shay two and three truck instruction books. There is a lot of rolling stock still available.

Here is a link to the Yahoo MDC Roundhouse Group that I belong to. Join and look in the Files Section and the Photos section. Search the group’s archives.

The below site has MDC information.

All that I have read says it is quite a challenge to get one running decently.

Good luck.

just contact Athearn, they got 8 truck-trailers of stuff when They got RoundHouse, I have a shay that needed parts I bought off ebay and they just sent the part no charge. Just try to give them the part number and description, I dont know if they will charge yet or not but try them.

I hope they bring the kits back…hint hint…

I have the directions on how to build the 2 truck that I got off the yahoo forums. Ho seeker I got the parts list from. Now all i need is the parts. I completely disassembled it the other day and lubed everything up nice and cleaned all the dust off so I can give it a proper paint job. Does anyone have atherns number so I can give them a call?

The following parts from North West Short Line are identified in The MDC Shay Handbook by Jeff Johnston, published by Oso Publishing Company, a 96-page booklet on how to get an MDC Shay to run properly. These are not all of the replacement parts you are looking for, but are recommended as replacements for the MDC parts to make a smoother running model.

186-6, HO/HOn3 Partial Regear Kit. Brass input and idler gears, plus new axle worm gears

188-6, Bull Gear Upgrade Kit. Replace the plastic factory-supplied bull gear and U-joint drive parts with brass gear and smaller profile universal joints.

16305-9, Sagami 16x31-mm dual-shaft can motor and flywheel.

Just be aware that these parts are likely to cost more than you paid for the basic kit, and there’s no guarantee that NWSL still has them in stock since their business is for sale because the owners want to retire.

If one were to purchase all of the replacement and add-on detail parts listed in this booklet, you could easily spend $200-$300 just to make an $80 kit run. A Bachmann Shay is a much better choice.

Apparently you missed my response to this issue. The new Roundhouse does not have any old stock. This has been discussed in other forums. You and many others are trying to find Shay parts. But here is the phone number at the bottom of the below page. The same number is used for Athearn and Roundhouse. I recently bought some parts for my new Roundhouse steamers. It is not old stock.

I agree. I’d assemble what parts you’ve got (without the motor), weather it up, and park it by your enginehouse. Use it to represent a cannibalized locomotive.

Mark

I know jeff, he was in the club I was in for a while.

Micro Mark has the Spectrum three truck Shay for $208.50, DCC and Sound using a Tsunami decoder.

DCC ready is $94.95. The Tsunami decoder cost $113 if you install the decoder yourself. Do the math while thinking of the MDC Shay.

Try calling customer support, I personally don’t mess with electronics and that sort or stuff. But it is better to love and lost than never to of loved at all.

well it is official it will be a dummy engine by the engine house
