Hi Guys. Can someone explain to me what sheathed box cars are and what the difference is between single and double shaethed is. I know they are wooden cars, but could you tell me more and how to tell the difference between them. Thanks…Jamie
Jamie:
Sheathing is the side wall of the box car.
Single sheathed means there’s only one layer of wood, usually on the inside of the framework. These are the boxcars where you can see all the vertcal and diagonal bracing.
Double sheathed means there’s a layer of wood (or metal) on both sides of the framing.
I’m not sure why double sheathed. I remeber that the inner layer is to keep cargo and whatever from catching on the framework.
(I bet we get a few replies telling us about metal siding.)
