Sheet Cork

I needed some 1/4 inch sheet cork for yards and was surprised at the price $45 for 15 sqr. ft. so went to local hardware store and got 16 sqr.feet ( 4 x 4 ft ) for $20. this is cork underlay for hardwood floors. 1/4 inch or 6 mm. it comes on 4 ft. wide rolls and they will cut to length at no extra charge. Hope this helps someone.

How does this compare to the typical Midwest Cork product interms of eveness and smoothness?

I purchased some discount store bulletin board/decorative cork tiles, but ran a little test before using. Ended up with some green tinted ballast. I suppose it must have been some sort of chemical reaction. Didn’t happen with the Midwest stuff.

Staples (and probably any office supplies store) has rolls of bulletin board cork for about $15.

I found some nice rolls of cork at Hobby Lobby. With the 40% coupon it was a good deal.

you can also pick up 1’x1’ sheets in sets of four at any office supply store, CVS, or big box store. I use them for yards and industries. The height is about equal with HO cork from train supply companies

Excellent! Thank you for the tip…

I picked up cork sheets that are used for drawer liners at Home Depot. They are about 3/16" thick and come in a 36" roll.

Also used cork underlayment. 1/8" in my case for spurs, yeards, etc. Bought 100 sq ft roll 4’ wide for $38.00 from Wayfair. Cork particles are more coarse than Midwest and does not contain rubber bits like Midwest but it worked great. Used it as sheet in my yard areas and also made my own split roadbed for the spurs.

I’ve been using 2mm black foam sheets from Hobby Lobby with great success. They come in 18"x12" sheets and can easily be cut with my wife’s paper cutter (shhh…) to size. I cut full width strips for straights (HO/On30 size) and then half again lengthwise for curves. It takes paint well and I use a THIN smear of clear drying latex caulk to secure track to it. Best part - 89 cents per sheet full price - 30-40% cheaper once per month when they have their “sales.”
