Today I was given an HO scale KATO NW2 that needs some repairs. I have been unable to figure out how to remove the shell nor to find any instructions on line. If you know how to remove the shell, please enlighten me.

I had the same problem some time ago. I couldn’t figure how for the life of me. The shell is an extremely tight fit that is slid down over the weights. Small nubs keep it in place. I believe that over time the plastic shell may stiften or shrink causing removal quite ditficult. I kept working the shell w/ small flat blades and screwdrivers @ the spots just above the trucks and it did come off. So it would be easier to ever remove again, I filed down the nubs a bit before reassembly.
“Simply” lift it off but is has an extreme tight fit. Take your time.
There are dimples on the frrame and corresponding dimple holes in the shell. Kato used to have pictures on their web site of how to remove it. I filed off the dimples so I can remove it if and when I need to. I couold not use their method and had to go the screwdriver method.
Remove the couplers by very carefully prying the sides of the coupler pockets open. The shell should then pull straight up and off.
