How do you remove the shell of a bachmann sd40-2 and how do you get the shell off a athearn RTR GP40-2? I’m pinching where it tells me to but it wont some off.
On the Athearn RTR I have and the one Bachmann, the shells are held on by the coupler pockets. Pull the screw, slid the pocket out and the shells should come off.

BNSF,
Are there any screws that need to be removed? Have you removed them all? If not, you may need to remove both sets of couplers on each locomotive. Also, rotate (swivel) the trucks to see if there are any screws hidden behind them.
Hope that helps…
Tom
On the athearn the couplers aren’t skrewed on, I don’t know how they’re held on. I looked at the instucktions and it showed/said their is 4 hooks on the sheel that go to the fule tank, I tryed but they wont pop. How do you get them to pop off? And on the bachmann I try tacking the coupler pockets off agin.
Athearn. Squeeze the shell where the 4 clips are and pull (after you remvove the couplers). When you get the shell off, cut off the clips…the couplers will hold the shell on.
Bachmann. Remove the couplers and find the 2 screws on the running board. Remove and pull…Bachmanns tend to be tight.

Turn the Athearn over and look at the bottom of the fuel tank. If there are four rectangular holes that means the shell is held on by 4 tension clips. Grab the middle of the shell above the fuel tank with one hand, get a good grip on the fuel tank with the other hand and pull them apart. You’ll have to pull hard.
