“Shooting stars skim overhead as the crew of a westbound stack train sits at Antelope waiting for a green signal to depart the yard. There final destination is the port of Oakland, where the containers will be loaded on to ships bound for China. Also in the consist is a ex-Conrail SD60 and a NS SD40-2.”
Those aren’t “shooting stars”, they are the visible harmonics of the spectrum used by the beams of the GPS locators on the top of the locomotives (those round white domes). The beams are transmitting the locomotives’ locations and operational status to the UP sattelite in orbit.
At first I thought the beams were part of the new ‘no tresspassing’ and safety policy where the locomotives are to be equipped with lasers to vaporize debris on the right-of-way. The beams will also have a “stun” setting to be used in case of tresspassers and suicides.
Of course there will be Trains. It’s the most efficient way to transport large amounts of dilithium crystals from the federation mines to the Assembly Plants.
