I’m Currently trying to model a Maintainance facility, and have came to the realization that I’m going to need me a shop switcher, and I’m thinking of a critter, Anyone know about some small drives or chassis?
There was this thread from 2008 that mentioned some contemporary underfloor drives by name. I suspect that options and choices will have become much better with the availability of inexpensive NIB magnets.
You have to decide whether the ‘critter’ needs enough power and weight to move cars, or is just “for show” moving around.
At least one of these drives had a movable axle so you could set the wheelbase equal to a ‘Bloomberg’ B sideframe, as on the Conrail ‘corded electric’ shop goat.
I’m thinking it’ll move some “Dead”(Dummy or Silent MU via DCC) Power around the yard
I do not know if they are still around. They use to have a motor called a “spud”. It was an under the floor type of critter. I had thought (long ago) about getting one to try an fit into my 1-ton yard mule. But, didn’t. Can’t even remember who made them. Gotta start looking, I guess.
Not much help, I guess.

I’ve heard of NWSL’s Stanton Drives, I also have a GE 25 Tonner frame from Model Power.
I guess that should be a 44-ton, not a 1-ton

I’m considering the Bachmann GE 70 Tonner, or upgrading the motor in my Model Power 25 Tonner, adding DCC along the way (It’s currently a Flatcar Load and deactivated with the motor in for ballast) I also have an Athearn BB Baldwin S-12, But I’m modelling the Early 2000’s, And it’s pretty big for a shop switcher (Limited by transfer Table).
I’ve heard of the NWSL stanton drive, but I don’t know what they’re like.
Kato makes a fairly inexpensive, small 4-wheel drive for their N scale ‘pocket line’ which I believe is a smooth runner. I wonder if one could be kit-bashed into an HO drive by replacing the wheels and creating longer axles. Just a thought.
