Hi there I am going to the Wasghinton Area on a business trip and will be satying in the Tyson Corners Area at the Ritz Carleton Hotel in Va, and was wondering if there are any good HO model train stores close by I am not sure if ZI will have wheels so may have to Cab it.
If you can spare a couple of hours, it’ll be worth the drive up to Baltimore to MB Klein. It’s located off of I-83 a bit north of Baltimore in Cockeysville. (yes, there really is a place called Cockeysville) It’s easily the best hobby shop, nay, Train Shop in the Mid Atlantic region.
Closer to DC is Peach Creek Shops, a must see if you model the steel industry in any way shape or form. It’s in Laurel Maryland just the other side of the beltway.
There are no good HO hobby shops in Washington, D.C.or Northern Va. There used to be quite a few, but they have all closed. There are some limited shops that stock mostly hi-rail with some HO and they are a good cab ride from Tyson’s.
I frequent Mainline Hobbies in Blue Ridge Summit Pa. (southwest of Gettysburg near the Maryland/PA state line) and Peach Creek Shops in Laurel Md. Mainline is close to 100 miles away and Peach Creek is almost 50 if you go around the beltway and then take 95 north to Baltimore. Both are 100% railroad but are probably too far away for you to see. Both have fine websites with dirrections provided.
There is a big Lionel and Mikes Train House dealer in Kensington MD, not far off the beltway (just outside) on Conn Ave. He has some used HO and some new as well. Conn Av is not that many exits around from Tysons (both on the northern zone).
If you happen to be near the Metro subway, the Wheaton Md stop is only about 8 blocks from his shop
