Show me your favorite barn!

I will eventually have a farm on my layout and I was wondering what’s your favorite barn kit? I thought it would be nice to see what’s out there. They can be in or out of production. Also, I’ve been having trouble finding a GOOD looking silo. My layout is set in the mid 1950’s.Thanks

Hi!

A farm for my mid-50s HO layout was a must, but finding the barn and outbuildings was a major task (farmhouse is easy). My search was 10 years ago, and there are many more choices out there now. I ended up with a Model Power kit for the barn, which I spent a lot of time painting and weathering. I also got a kit for outbuildings (forgot the name). The results are acceptable for the buildings themselves, but the thing that makes the scene is the tractors and other mechanical stuff. After a major search, I got two lifelike sets and repainted and weathered them and the results are great. Oh, Athearn has some nice old Deere tractors that complete the picture (after animals/people are added).

I don’t have the wherewithal for pasting pictures yet, or I would enclose them.

ENJOY,

Here is one.

This builds into a nice barn:

The interior is detailed with stalls and a hay loft.

I found this barn on a recent trip to Cades Cove in the smoky mountains of Tennessee. It has a unique cantilever design. I have been looking for a barn to build for my 1900’s logging railroad and this will be it.

My favorite barn is not a kit but an N scale scratchbuild.

The prototype barn had an HO layout in the loft, but I modeled it as Lionel tinplate.

A barn would be fairly easy to scratch build. Get yourself some Evergreen sheet siding, maybe board and batten, or perhaps a v-groove that has appropriate spacing for your scale. You only need a handful of windows, which you might be able to scavenge from other kits you have laying around.

See what you can create… you might surprise yourself!

The farm at the top of the hill on the SLO&W:

It is an American Model Builders 3 in 1 kit (Which I can’t find listed anymore at Walthers) The barn is the same as the “Country Barn Laser Kit”. The Silo, Spring House (Milk House), and Silo Chopper/Blower with pipe were all scratch builds. The Farm House is part of the 3 in 1 kit.

The barn in this farm scene is just a easy-to-assemble kit from IHC. The farm house is by Campbell Models.

Here’s an HO scale barn I am currently working on. It’s scratchbuilt I used evergreen styrene siding for the walls, And I used a for sale sign from wall mart for the roof, Then I cut strips of 800 grit wet/dry sandpaper with pinking sheares to make diamond pattern shingles. I still have more to do with it before it’s finished.I loosely followed plans that are in the feb 2008 RMC.

Mine is a scratch-build as well. There is lots of inspiration out there for barns

This one was modelled off my Father-in-laws barn.
