sig pics

I like most of the pics, but hugeeee sig pics are a drain on us 56kers.
use a pic hosting service and link to the real sized pic.
Make a smaller one or a true quality sig styled pic.

i hope mines not too big?

A sig pic can be very small, and still do the job. Look at mine for a example. It’s only 80 x 80 pixels.

so you think mines to big??

You can choose whether you see photos in signatures. Just update your profile and select either “no” or “yes, text only” where it asks if you wi***o view images in signatures. A far simpler solution than trying to convince everyone to limit the size of the photos they post.

There are two different sizes. The size in pixels and the size in KB.

Your picture is 640 x 480 pixels and 152 KB.

So you may wonder what size is the importent one, it’s the size in KB because that’s the size that is downloaded to the user that looks at your picture.

My picture is 80 x 80 pixels and 8 KB.

Let’s pretend that my picture takes 1 second to download for a user with a 56K modem. Then we look at your picture that is 152 KB. 152/8 = 19. Your picture will take 19 seconds to download. That’s a really big difference, 19 times longer then mine.

But there are solutions. Just as a test I looked at your picture in Photoshop, and there was no problem to optimize it to 48 KB, and still keep the size in pixels to 640 x 480.

48/8 = 6. Now your picture takes only 6 times longer instead of 19. If you want users to download it faster you must optimize it more, not always possible because there is a limit where your picture looses too much quality. And when that happens you must make it smaller (in pixels).

Mine’s not that big.

Your picture is 800 x 600 and 116 KB. If you make it 65% (520x390 pixels) of the size you have now, the size will be 52 KB and that’s good.

you think thats better now?

No, you must make the picture smaller yourself and upload it to the place where you have the picture located (photobucket). The test I did was only a way to describe what you need to do to make it smaller. So your picture is still the same.

well to me its only small 120 X 120 or something

Where do you get that size from?

photo bucket, 160X120 or 18k

When I first looked at the picture it was still the same size. But now it’s smaller. 160X120 or 18k as you said. And as you can see, the picture still does the job as a sig.

Just as a test I looked at your picture in Photoshop and it was no problem to optimize it down from 18 KB to 8 KB.

Welcome to the ‘fast loading sig pictures’ club [:D]

thats large, and others are even larger.

example of a perfect sig pic.

I dont want to turn off the sigs if thats an option, but its like someone posts a tiny post, and theres a huuuge pic…does it make sense?

[#ditto][#wstupid]
A while Back I actually turned off my sig. picture for that reason. I too use 56k modem and sometimes down loading a post takes forever, I’d love to upgrade to DSL or cable broadband, just not feasable at this time. The huge pictures really are a pain sometimes, although I do enjoy viewing tem. [soapbox]

cool thanks for the tip electro

Your pic is 16 KB, no problem to make it 8 KB in Photoshop. That’s half the size. When you only have a few colors, save it as a .gif instead and use only 16 colors.

I don’t think 16 KB is a problem, just want to tell how to make the picture even smaller.

How does my sig pic rate? Let me know if it is too big and I will resize it.

Thanks,

Ryan

Your picture is 155x152 pixels and 8 KB, perfect! [:D]
