Sorry for being a bit OT, here, but it’s sort of layout-related.
we have about 500 pieces of rolling stock, and are currently using the Axian boxes to store our n-scale rolling stock. We’d like to have some drawers under the layout to provide better storage and viewing of our rolling stock. Has anyone found a good drawer system to store n-scale rolling stock without their jewel boxes? Has anyone tried the “flat files” that are used for plans, blueprints? any other suggestions
Check out some used furniture stores or Good Will for old dressers or bureaus that can be cut down if to tall. Then slip them under the layout. Use the drawers for storage.
Hi Nik N dad,
I’ve been using plastic Document Cases for years, 2 layers with a layer of bubble wrap in-between works great. I wouldn’t do it with locos just rolling stock. You will get them from your local stationer, I did and they ain’t that dear for what they are.

pick.
Not sure my solution will help you–
I worked in TV a decade ago and acquired a bunch of boxes in which 12 inch diameter reels of 1 inch recording tape were shipping.
Good for holding one layer of rolling stock with corrugated cardboard dividers.

I store cars by type-
miscellaneous tank cars left
just SANTA FE 40 foot box cars center
hopper cars- mostly 2 bay hoppers dedicated to ore service (“honorary” ore cars. Santa Fe’s real ore cars were like nothing available commercially, but they did use hoppers loaded to capacity WEIGHT for ore shipments…)
When I have a shipment to plan, I can pull out the box with the type of car to used and select what is needed.
I stack these boxes on a rollaround bookcase cart. The cart rolls away to access layout built over actual bookcases which are too heavy to consider moving, and which are under the back portion of layout currently existing. Another layout section is planned to go over the rolling rolling-stock storage.

I cobbled larger boxes from 2 12-square boxes to make train size containers for passenger consists. The silver-wrapped container on the bottom right compartment is equipment for the stainless-steel all-streamlined Texas Chief, the fruit-carton-label wrapped box for the California Special which ran mixed streamlined and heavyweight equipment, and the blueprint-patterned box for the Texas mail and express, #5/6 with all-heavyweight passenger cars, plus express boxes and reefers.
